5 Key Characteristics of Relational Equity: Building Strong Relationships

Learn how to cultivate relational equity in your personal and professional life. Understand the importance of trust, investment, listening, caring, and authenticity.

Relational equity is the value you place on your relationships. It’s what makes people want to do business with you, and it’s a powerful tool for building long-term success.

Relational equity can be defined as “Intentionally investing in building a connection with others, to create trust.” When someone thinks of you, your company, or your brand, they’ll associate it with an experience they’ve had with you–whether that experience was good or bad (or likely somewhere in between).

If someone has had a positive experience with you, then they’re likely going to feel more positively toward you. Or, if you’re a business, they’ll feel more positively toward whatever product or service it is that you’re offering next time around because they feel like they know what kind of experience they can expect from doing business with you again based on their previous interactions with others within the organization over time.

There are numerous aspects to building relational equity, but some of the key ways are outlined below.

    Building Trust

The importance of trust cannot be understated. Trust is the foundation for strong relationships, and it’s what keeps people coming back to you or your business. If you want to build long-lasting relationships with anyone, it’s critical that you work on building trust with them.

Be honest about what you can do for someone (and what they can expect from working with you). Don’t over-promise or underdeliver; this will only hurt your brand in the long run!

Be transparent about pricing, delivery times, and other details related to your products/services so that customers know exactly what they’re getting into before making a purchase decision. If something changes after they’ve already made their purchase decision–like an increase in shipping costs due to a large order size–let them know right away so there aren’t any surprises later down the road when they receive their package at home!

Investing Time And Energy In Others

You may be wondering, “Why should I invest my time and energy in others?” The answer is simple: it’s one of the most powerful ways to build relational equity.

Relational equity is a concept that describes how much your relationships are worth to you. It helps explain why some people are willing to do things for others without expecting anything in return, while others won’t even lend their friends a pen without getting something out of it (like a favor or money). The more invested we become in our relationships–by giving them our attention, effort, and affection–the more valuable those relationships become to us.

Investing time and energy into another person’s life can take many forms: from simply listening when someone needs someone else’s ear; helping them with an important project; volunteering together on an organization board; or simply being there when they need support or encouragement during difficult times.

    Listening Well

Listening well is one of the most powerful ways to build relational equity. Listening well means listening with your whole body and mind, not just your ears. It means being present with another person in a way that allows them to feel heard, understood, and valued–and it can be done even when you disagree with them!

    When you listen well:

    • You show that you care about what they have to say by making eye contact and occasionally nodding as they speak (this helps them feel heard).

    • You validate their feelings by acknowledging how they’re feeling (e.g., “I can see why this would be frustrating”).

    • You ask questions that help clarify what was said so that there’s no misunderstanding between the two of you (e.g., “What do we mean by ‘best practices’?”).

    Caring For Others

Relationships are the foundation of our lives. They shape who we are and how we see the world, but that doesn’t mean they’re easy to maintain. It can be quite difficult to keep up with all of your relationships in a meaningful way–especially when you’re busy working or taking care of yourself.

However, there is one way that you can make sure your relationships stay strong: by caring for others! Caring for others is an important part of life because it allows us to help those who need us most while also strengthening our bonds with them (and vice versa).

    Authenticity

Authenticity and being genuine in relationships are key to having a successful and meaningful one.

There are many reasons why it’s important to be authentic and genuine in any relationship. Still, some of them include that it encourages open and transparent communication which prevents misunderstandings, and it supports general growth.

Authenticity is the quality of being real or genuine. This means that you are who you say you are. When you’re authentic, you’re honest with yourself, others, and the world around you. This is important because when you’re not honest with yourself or others, communication breaks down.

When we go into relationships to be genuine, we have the opportunity to build trust with our partner(s). Trust helps us feel safe and comfortable in our relationships which lead to more positive experiences for everyone involved!

    So What?

Now that you have a better understanding of relational equity, it’s time to take action.

Start by asking yourself: Who do I want to become? What do my friends and family want? How can I help them achieve their goals in a way that benefits us all?

Next, take steps toward creating an environment where people feel safe sharing their feelings. When they feel comfortable doing so, they will be more likely to share information about themselves that helps build trust between you and them.

Finally, keep in touch with those who matter most in your life by staying connected through social media or by making sure you’re available when someone needs advice or support–and then follow through on what you say!
